The Football Association of Malawi has restructured the national football pyramid following the Super League of Malawi's decision to rebrand the top-tier competition to the Premiership. According to FAM, the association adjusted the lower divisions to resolve naming redundancies and align the regional system. Under the new five-tier structure, the National Division League serves as the second tier, followed by Regional Division League One, Regional Division League Two, and the District Championship. In a separate announcement on Monday, FAM also launched a new Women's Football Strategic Plan.
In domestic competition, Sunbird Nkopola secured the 2026 FAM National Beach Soccer Club Championship title after defeating Peninsula Stars 4-1, according to FAM. On the pitch, Mighty Tigers took an early lead in the NBS Bank National Division League, finishing the opening matchweek at the top of the standings.
Update: As the Flames prepare for their previously announced international friendlies against Ethiopia on June 6 and June 9, head coach Kalisto Pasuwa highlighted the need for an aggressive mindset ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. According to Africa Top Sports, Pasuwa intends to use the upcoming matches in Addis Ababa to test squad depth and address offensive weaknesses. The friendlies have taken on added importance due to uncertainty surrounding the 2026 Cosafa Cup, which remains unconfirmed by regional organisers, Malawi Nation reports.
