Researchers from the University of Malawi (UNIMA) and the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) have partnered to develop a smartphone-based artificial intelligence system designed to detect aflatoxins in groundnuts. According to a UNIMA bulletin published on May 18, the technology will allow users to test crops directly in the field to improve national food safety and protect consumers.
In other university news, 29 UNIMA students have officially received certificates from the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) after completing a one-week basic refereeing course. FAM announced the certification in a press release following a closing ceremony on May 15. The students, who are pursuing various academic programmes, include 26 males and three females.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Malawi is advancing national digital education efforts by commissioning new training materials. According to recruitment announcements published on May 18, the organisation is seeking experts to develop digital literacy training content intended to strengthen digital skills and inclusion programmes across the country over a seven-month period.
