Construction at the Kangankunde Rare Earths Project in Balaka District is advancing steadily, with operator Lindian Resources Limited targeting first production by the fourth quarter of 2026. According to Nation Online and Nyasa Times, civil works for the processing plant are currently underway, keeping the project on track for an October 2026 commissioning. The development is backed by $100 million in recent financing and is expected to position Malawi as a global supplier of critical minerals like dysprosium and terbium, diversifying the national economy.

Update: Global geopolitical tensions continue to strain the agricultural sector of Malawi. A new report from the Africa Food Trade and Resilience Initiative highlights major price hikes for farming inputs. According to Nyasa Times, urea fertiliser prices in Malawi have surged by up to 58 percent in a single month and are now nearly 90 percent higher than last year. The price increases, driven by disruptions along the Strait of Hormuz trade route due to the Middle East conflict, are expected to worsen domestic inflation and deplete foreign exchange reserves.

In related economic news, African Union Southern Africa Regional Office ambassador Hilda Suka Mafudze has urged Malawi to strategically manage its mineral resources rather than ceding them to foreign interests. Nyasa Times reports that Mafudze delivered the warning while presenting her credentials to President Peter Mutharika. She emphasised that domestic value addition is crucial for translating resource wealth into broader economic growth.
