The Public Health Institute of Malawi reported a sharp rise in Severe Acute Respiratory Infections in Dowa and Lilongwe, according to a May 19 surveillance bulletin. Dowa alone recorded 144 new cases, signaling that viral transmission is expanding into rural and peri-urban communities. The institute also documented 24 new measles alerts, bringing the cumulative confirmed cases to 287 across 23 districts for 2026. National disease tracking efforts faced administrative setbacks during the same period, as several central facilities, including Zomba Central Hospital, failed to submit complete and timely epidemiological reports.

In health infrastructure news, a delegation from the Saudi Fund for Development is in Malawi to evaluate financing for the long-awaited Blantyre District Hospital, Nyasa Times reports. The proposed medical facility is projected to cost approximately $32 million and is designed to reduce the patient load on existing referral hospitals in the Southern Region. Ministry of Health officials confirmed that the search for a design contractor is underway, with the project expected to begin in the 2026/27 financial year.
