The Ministry of Health has placed Malawi on high alert following the World Health Organisation's declaration that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda is a public health emergency of international concern, according to Nation Online. Ministry of Health head of health promotion Mavuto Thomas stated that the government has activated its emergency response systems. These measures include enhanced surveillance and screening of international travellers at ports of entry. Authorities are also preparing to distribute medical and response supplies across the country in anticipation of any potential cases.

In regional developments, a new analysis warns that Malawi and other Southern African Development Community member states are increasingly trapped in a "disaster-debt cycle" due to a lack of investment in Disaster Risk Reduction systems, ReliefWeb reports. The publication notes that international funding priorities have largely shifted toward energy mitigation rather than climate adaptation. This funding gap leaves regional nations struggling to protect vulnerable populations from severe water crises, displacement, and weather-related infrastructure damage.
