Malawi has been upgraded from 'Partly Free' to 'Free' in the Freedom in the World 2026 report, according to Nation Online and Freedom House. The organisation attributed the status change to the successful September 2025 general elections resulting in a peaceful transfer of power, growing judicial independence, and a broader strengthening of the rule of law. Malawi was one of three nations, alongside Bolivia and Fiji, to achieve the improved rating.
In international diplomatic developments, Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani sent a formal written message to President Arthur Peter Mutharika to discuss and support bilateral ties. The communication was delivered on Thursday by Fahad Rashid Al Muraikhi, Qatar's Ambassador to Malawi, during a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs George Thapatula Chaponda, according to the Amiri Diwan.
