Update: Malawi Raises Xenophobia Concerns at SADC Retreat as Qatar Strengthens Diplomatic Ties

Update: The Government of Malawi has formally addressed the safety of its citizens in South Africa following recent attacks on undocumented foreign nationals in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. According to SABC News, the concerns were raised directly with South Africa's International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola during the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Foreign Ministers' retreat in Skukuza. Lamola stated that the South African government condemns the violence against foreign nationals and is working to address the situation.

Malawi's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. George Chaponda, is participating in the May 22 SADC retreat in his capacity as Chairperson of the SADC Ministerial Committee of the Organ, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) reports. The regional gathering focuses on global geopolitical developments, trade disruptions, and their economic effects on southern Africa.

Update: In ongoing diplomatic engagements with the Middle East, the Amir of Qatar has sent a written message to President Arthur Peter Mutharika to discuss strengthening bilateral relations. According to the Amiri Diwan, the correspondence was delivered to Minister Chaponda by Qatar's Ambassador to Malawi, Fahad Rashid Al Muraikhi.
