Parliament is currently vetting a new cohort of diplomatic appointees amid renewed public scrutiny over the purpose and cost of Malawi's foreign missions, according to Nation Online. Lawmakers and commentators are pushing for a shift toward economic diplomacy across the country's 25 diplomatic stations. Nominees undergoing the vetting process include Benedicto Wokomaatani Malunga for London, Edward Sawerengera for Washington DC, and Evance Matabwa for Berlin. Meanwhile, Ambassador Khwauli Msiska has already formally assumed his duties, presenting his letters of credence in Addis Ababa this week to Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie and African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.

On the regional front, an African Union high-level mission recently visited Malawi to support the accelerated implementation of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme Kampala Declaration. According to the African Union, AU Commissioner Moses Vilakati met with Malawian government officials and development partners to advance agricultural cooperation and rural development.

Additionally, Malawi is participating in the newly launched Enhancing Women Entrepreneurship Development Project, an initiative of the Southern African Development Community. According to a SADC Secretariat release, the two-year regional project will support women entrepreneurs in Malawi, Madagascar, Mozambique, and Lesotho as part of broader commitments to gender equality and economic empowerment.

Update: Repatriation efforts for Malawians in South Africa are intensifying as an unofficial June 30 deadline set by anti-immigration groups approaches. Regional networks including SABC News report that migrants have been gathering at transit stations in Pretoria and outside consulate offices, urgently waiting for transport home to avoid potential violence. Authorities have already processed more than 15,000 Malawian nationals for voluntary return.
