An American pilot, Terry Lee Jennings, has been ordered by the Blantyre Magistrate's Court to pay a K3 million fine or serve one year in prison after landing an aircraft at Bakili Muluzi International Airport without proper clearance, according to Nyasa Times. Jennings was arrested by Southern Region police on August 5 after flying in from South Africa. Presiding Magistrate Paul Chiotcha handed down the sentence, and Jennings has since paid the fine and departed the country.
In a separate incident at the High Court in Blantyre, Nyasa Times reports that an altercation occurred following a land compensation hearing. Lawyer Wilson Sudi was allegedly assaulted by Masauko White shortly after the court reviewed a K95 million compensation order against White in favour of Sudi's client, Dominic Chipangula. Sudi confirmed he sought medical treatment and reported the incident to the Chichiri Police Unit, though White's legal representation has disputed the direct assault claims.
In Lilongwe, the Kanengo Police Station arrested 17 individuals for possessing stolen electricity wires. Police reports indicate the intelligence-driven operation on August 6 targeted a syndicate responsible for stealing cables connecting homes in Area 25 to meter boxes. The suspects were charged with possessing unlawfully obtained property and were scheduled to appear before the Mkukula First Grade Magistrate Court on Friday.
The Malawi Police Service has also launched a community awareness campaign in Mzimba District to address incidents of mob justice, murder, and suicide. According to the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation, Director of Community Policing Alexander Ngwala led the August 7 campaign through Engalaweni, Manyamula, and Nchelera. Ngwala urged residents to resolve disputes peacefully and report crimes directly to authorities rather than taking the law into their own hands.
In other court news, Nyasa Times reports that the High Court's Criminal Division in Lilongwe began hearing defense testimonies from four men accused of the February 2023 murder of former Central Medical Stores inventory supervisor Belington Mkumba. Justice Nzondi Mvula adjourned the proceedings to August 10 after the first defendant took the stand. Additionally, South African Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi confirmed on Friday that diplomatic and legal efforts are ongoing to extradite Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife from Malawi to South Africa.
