In agricultural and environmental research, a new study published by the International Food Policy Research Institute on August 7 detailed the limitations of site-specific soil conservation strategies. The researchers found that providing Malawian smallholder farmers with customized fertilizer recommendations based on plot soil tests produced no measurable change in crop yields on its own. However, according to the institute, when those recommendations were paired with a $100 voucher, overall fertilizer use increased and maize yields rose by about 20 percent. The study noted that farmers still largely ignored the specific soil recommendations, opting instead to spend the voucher funds on standard fertilizer mixes.
