The Malawi government has invested K16 billion in agricultural interventions to counter the expected effects of a pending 'super' El Niño weather pattern during the 2026/2027 lean season, according to Nation Online. As part of the initiative, local firm Fisd Limited has been contracted to supply 800 solar-powered irrigation systems valued at K10.8 billion. The Ministry of Agriculture stated the systems will cover 4,000 hectares nationwide. In other developments, Malawi's agriculture sector recorded a 15 percent increase in maize production this season, a detail highlighted as AGRA Malawi celebrated its 20th anniversary in Lilongwe, Nyasa Times reports. Minister of Agriculture Roza Fatch Mbilizi commended the organisation's two-decade partnership with the government. She noted that the partnership has facilitated the release of 31 improved crop varieties and the production of more than 16,600 metric tonnes of certified seed to support smallholder farmers.
In preparation for the upcoming farming season, the Mwanza District Council has identified 4,738 direct beneficiaries for the 2026/2027 Farm Input Subsidy Programme, according to the Malawi News Agency. Chief Agriculture Officer Idruce Kanyenda indicated that local authorities are prioritizing transparency and accountability in the distribution of farm inputs to maintain consistent agricultural yields.
