Update: As the government concludes its voluntary return programme for citizens living in South Africa, the South African government has formally requested that Malawi reimburse the financial costs of the repatriation exercise. Maravi Express reports that South Africa's Department of Home Affairs Director-General Tommy Makhode confirmed the unbudgeted operation cost his department R292 million. Official letters have been dispatched through diplomatic channels to the governments of Malawi, Nigeria, and Ethiopia asking for financial compensation. This development follows the processing and return of tens of thousands of Malawians who fled recent insecurity and immigration enforcement operations in South Africa.
