Malawi's push for economic development requires immediate investment in climate-resilient infrastructure, according to Transport and Public Works Minister Jappie Mhango. Speaking at the opening of the 12th International Conference on Infrastructure Development and Investment in Africa in Blantyre on August 11, Mhango warned that the country's 2063 economic goals will fail without transport networks capable of withstanding extreme weather, as reported by the Ministry of Transport and Public Works. He noted that reliable roads and reduced logistics costs are essential for improving agricultural and business productivity.

In the technology sector, preparations are underway for the Digital Africa Summit Malawi Edition, scheduled for August 20 at the Bingu International Convention Center. TechAfrica News reports that the summit will gather policymakers, mobile operators, and investors to address infrastructure funding, taxation, and regulatory reforms needed to expand the digital economy of Malawi.

Update: Following its third meeting of 2026, the Reserve Bank of Malawi's Monetary Policy Committee has maintained the policy rate at 24.0 percent, according to Africa Updates. While inflation dropped to 22.9 percent, the committee cited global economic uncertainty, elevated import costs, and weather threats to food production as reasons to hold the rate steady. The central bank continues to project a 2.8 percent economic growth for the year.

Update: On the corporate side, NBS Bank has announced a K245 million financial reward for the Malawi Women's National Football Team, the Scorchers, following their historic qualification for the World Cup. Zodiak Online reports that the funds will be distributed among the 48-member delegation, with each receiving K7 million directly into their accounts. Chief Executive Officer Temwani Simwaka confirmed the commercial bank will also provide financial literacy training to help the team manage their new earnings.
