The Malawian government, in partnership with the International Labour Organization and the Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TEVETA), has advanced the country's Recognition of Prior Learning system. According to the ILO, the initiative recently issued certificates to 100 artisans who gained their competencies outside formal education systems. The program aims to formalise skills within Malawi's informal economy and provide workers with nationally recognised qualifications to create better employment opportunities.
In higher education, the University of Malawi (UNIMA) has scheduled its second congregation of the year for August 26 at the Great Hall in Zomba. According to an August 12 university announcement, Vice-Chancellor Professor Samson Sajidu will preside over the academic awards ceremony on behalf of Chancellor and State President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika. Meanwhile, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) officially began a new curriculum development exercise on August 11 for the second phase of the Food and Agriculture Organization's Social Protection and Agrifood Systems initiative, according to the university's agriculture faculty.
Additionally, Malawi's Ministry of Education has successfully integrated climate education into the country's National Adaptation Plan. A report titled "Climate Finance for Education" published by Earth Day noted that the inclusion was facilitated by the Climate Smart Education Systems Initiative. Rachel Chimbwete Phiri of the Ministry of Education stated that the integration involved direct coordination with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change and the Department of Disaster Management Affairs to secure future climate financing for the education sector.
