Update: Following the Malawi Scorchers' recent qualification for the Women's Africa Cup of Nations final, local sports experts are calling on the men's national team, the Flames, to adopt similar development strategies. According to a report by Nyasa Times on August 13, former players and analysts credit the women's team's recent achievements to deliberate grassroots investments and a focus on exporting talent to competitive overseas leagues. Former Flames player Peterkins Kaira noted that the men's side must match the sheer dedication demonstrated by the Scorchers to improve their own results in international competitions, while football administrator Christopher Njeula praised the targeted investments in women's football.

In other local sports news, the 2026 Malawi Youth Games national finals began in Lilongwe on August 13. According to Nkhoma Synod Radio and the Malawi Schools Sports Association, the multi-sport competitions are being held across venues including the Kamuzu Institute for Sports, Kamuzu Barracks Courts, and Civo Upper Stadium, with events running until August 17. Association President Blackson Malamula stated that officials are using the national finals to scout and identify promising athletes who will represent Malawi at the upcoming African Union Sports Council Region 5 Youth Games and other international fixtures.
