Malawi's annual headline inflation rate eased to 20.8 percent in July 2026, down from 21.1 percent in June, according to data released on August 15 by the National Statistical Office. Nyasa Times reports that the 0.3 percentage point decline was primarily driven by a slowdown in food inflation, which fell to 14.3 percent from 14.7 percent the previous month. Conversely, non-food inflation experienced a marginal increase, rising from 32.1 percent to 32.2 percent over the same period.
Despite the annual decrease, monthly price pressures intensified, particularly in rural areas. According to The Truth, month-on-month national inflation jumped to 2.0 percent in July compared to 0.1 percent in June. The sharp monthly increase was largely fueled by rising food costs, which climbed 2.9 percent after falling the previous month, placing continued strain on household budgets.
