Update: Building on recent efforts by universities to expand regional partnerships, the University of Malawi signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Zululand in South Africa on August 14. According to the University of Malawi, the agreement was finalised in Richards Bay during the International Conference on Water Challenges and Solutions. Vice-Chancellor Samson Sajidu said the partnership will facilitate joint research, postgraduate supervision, and student and staff exchange programmes.
In curriculum developments, the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources concluded a module formulation workshop on August 14 to design a new short course. According to a university statement, the programme is supported by the Food and Agriculture Organisation. The course will train district practitioners on linking social protection initiatives with agrifood systems.
Meanwhile, a new study led by young researchers from Malawi, Uganda, and Ethiopia has identified significant gaps in the delivery of sexuality education. According to AllAfrica, the researchers found that while national education policies exist on paper, many classroom teachers still default to abstinence messaging due to cultural discomfort and a lack of training. The report recommends improving teacher capacity to ensure students receive accurate reproductive health information.
Update: Following the initial release of the 2026 national examination results, the Ministry of Education published the specific pass rates for primary and junior secondary levels. According to the Malawi National Examinations Board, 198,903 candidates passed the Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education, representing an 81.17 percent pass rate. For the Junior Certificate of Education, 125,777 students passed, resulting in an 81.21 percent pass rate.
