Update: Following earlier reports of harsh Chiperoni weather hitting Malawi, the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services has issued fresh warnings for the week of August 17 to 23, 2026. According to the Malawi News Agency, the department expects strong Mwera winds to sweep across Lake Malawi and other water bodies, prompting advisories for fishermen and operators to exercise extreme caution on the water.
The shifting weather is driven by a high-pressure system developing off the coast of South Africa, which is pushing cool and moist air into the region. The weather department noted that while the week begins with rising daytime temperatures, cold Chiperoni conditions, including isolated drizzle and strong winds, will return from Thursday through Sunday, the Malawi News Agency reports. Officials also warned households against using charcoal burners in unventilated spaces during the cold nights to prevent suffocation.
In response to the updated forecast, the Road Safety Alliance of Malawi has urged drivers to adapt to the changing environment. According to the Malawi News Agency, ROSAF Executive Director Joel Jere cautioned that morning fog patches in valleys will severely reduce road visibility. He advised motorists to use low-beam headlights, keep windscreens clear, and increase following distances to avoid collisions.
