The Higher Education Students Loans and Grants Board has provisionally approved financial support for 33,258 students for the 2026/2027 academic year, according to Nyasa Times. Board spokesperson Mercy Chijere stated that the institution processed 46,386 applications, marking a nearly 24 percent increase from the previous year. The applicant data revealed a significant gender gap, with 27,894 male students applying for loans compared to 17,386 female students.
In university admissions, the University of Malawi released an additional list of candidates selected for its Mature Entry and Economic Fee-Paying programmes for the upcoming academic year, according to a statement from the university registrar. Concurrently, Mzuzu University is running preparatory bridging classes for a cohort of 62 students. These students are beneficiaries of the FAWEMA-Mastercard Foundation Bursary Programme, which is supported by the Civil Society Education Coalition.
In related infrastructure news, the Malawi Research and Education Network announced new plans to support reliable internet connectivity and digital services across university campuses. According to a press release from the organisation, these upgrades are being implemented under the Digital Malawi Acceleration Project.
