Malawi's foreign exchange reserves have grown by 11 percent year-on-year to reach $616.3 million in June 2026, according to the Reserve Bank of Malawi's latest Monthly Economic Review. Nyasa Times and The Nation report that the total, which equates to 2.5 months of import cover, represents a $60.4 million increase from the previous year. Despite the upward trend driven by gains in both official and private-sector reserves, financial experts caution that the growth is insufficient to resolve the foreign exchange shortages currently affecting local businesses. Economists emphasize that sustainable reserve accumulation will require a more diversified export base to reduce the country's heavy reliance on imports.

In the digital economy sector, a newly released GSMA report reveals a major gap in mobile internet adoption across the country. According to CIO Africa and IT News Africa, while approximately 87 percent of the population lives within 4G network coverage areas, unique mobile internet penetration currently sits at just 12.5 percent. The report, presented at the Digital Africa Summit in Lilongwe, projects that implementing policies to close this usage gap could generate an additional 1.1 trillion Kwacha in economic value and create up to 490,000 jobs by 2030.
