Former President Lazarus Chakwera declared the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) alive and ready for a political comeback during an address at the 40th CCAP Livingstonia Synod General Assembly in Kasungu on Sunday, according to Nyasa Times. Speaking to Christian delegates at Kamuzu Academy, Chakwera stated that the party remains a viable political force and is prepared to rescue the nation from its current problems following its exit from government. He was later met by crowds of grassroots supporters in Mponela during his return journey to Lilongwe.
The synod gathering served as a convergence point for several prominent political figures and featured lighthearted cross-party exchanges. According to Nyasa Times, former Vice-President Khumbo Kachali drew laughter from the audience when he jokingly suggested that UTM Party leader Dalitso Kabambe would have to wait until 2060 to rise to power.
Update: At the same assembly, Second Vice-President Enock Chihana provided a new timeline for the Mombera University project, which is now referred to as Mbelwa University. Following earlier coverage on the project's advancement, Chihana announced that the government expects to break ground and resume construction within two months, according to Nyasa Times. He used the address to assure the public that the current administration is committed to completing national development initiatives launched by previous governments.
