Sunday, April 5, 2026

The application window for the government's Initial Primary Teacher Education course officially closes today, April 5, 2026. According to the National Council for Higher Education, the two-year training programme requires applicants to hold a Malawi School Certificate of Education with at least four credits, including English and a science subject. Candidates who successfully complete their studies at public Teacher Training Colleges will be awarded a Primary Teaching Certificate of Education by the Malawi National Examinations Board.

In university research news, the University of North Carolina announced on April 5 that PhD candidate and Fogarty Fellow Laika Maganga is conducting health studies at UNC Project Malawi in Lilongwe. According to the university, Maganga is researching the social stigma experienced by young Malawian women living with HIV. Her fieldwork will help design new support programmes for vulnerable youth in the country.

Meanwhile, education and youth officials have been urged to increase support for young talent. According to MBC Online, African Union Sports Council Region 5 Chief Executive Officer Stanley Mutoya has challenged Malawi and other member states to invest in talent development. Mutoya issued the call to build lasting sporting opportunities for young people across the region.
