Following earlier coverage of the recent fuel price increases, new reports highlight the severe strain the rising costs are placing on Malawi's agricultural sector. According to the Nyasa Times, farmers are dealing with soaring expenses for transport and diesel-powered equipment. These added costs are driving up overall production expenses, particularly for growers who were already struggling to afford basic farm inputs like fertiliser.

The rising operational costs are directly threatening national food security by forcing food prices higher. The Nyasa Times reports that with nearly a third of the country's population currently facing serious hunger, the elevated transport and production expenses will make basic goods even less affordable. According to the publication, economic experts, including Dr. Ben Dzolowere, warn that the fuel increment risks pushing ordinary citizens further into hardship while squeezing the profit margins of small and medium agricultural enterprises across the country.
