External partners are closely monitoring Malawi's economic policies as international funding challenges mount. According to the Mail & Guardian, Malawi's $175 million Extended Credit Facility with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) expired in May 2025 without a single completed programme review. Analysts warn that major international donors will not resume direct budget support until the government negotiates a new IMF arrangement to address high inflation and a fiscal deficit that has reached 10.1 percent of GDP.

Update: Donor relations have also been drawn into focus by executive changes to Malawi's disaster response framework. The Mail & Guardian reports that the transfer of the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) from the office of First Vice-President Jane Ansah to the Office of the President and Cabinet under President Peter Mutharika has raised operational questions. Because DoDMA coordinates directly with the United Nations and international non-governmental organisations, its structural stability remains a priority for foreign partners as the country responds to heavy flooding and climate shocks.
