Update: Malawi's Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and the Malawi Police Service are investigating suspicious cash withdrawals totaling K5.5 billion from a bank account belonging to Yusuf Investments Limited. According to a joint statement released on April 3 by ACB spokesperson Jacqueline Ngongonda and Police spokesperson Lael Chimtembo, 25 large cash transactions were made between late January and early March. The agencies suspect the withdrawals involve money laundering and corruption connected to the Public Service Pension Trust Fund's K90.125 billion part-payment for the Amaryllis Hotel, as reported by Nyasa Times and Nation Online.

In a related court ruling, High Court Justice Redson Kapindu dismissed an application by Yusuf Investments seeking to unfreeze its restricted bank accounts, according to Nyasa Times. The court found that the company's legal approach was defective due to procedural irregularities, ensuring the financial restrictions imposed under the Financial Crimes Act remain active.

In a separate development, a fatal shooting incident from 2020 is attracting renewed public attention following the elevation of Noel Kaira to Deputy Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service. According to Malawi Cables, Kaira allegedly shot and killed an unarmed neighbor in Lilongwe's Area 49 after mistaking the victim for a robbery suspect while responding to a distress call.

Although police previously confirmed that their investigations were complete and the file was headed to the Director of Public Prosecutions, the matter has not yet reached the courts in 2026. Legal analysts and governance advocates told Malawi Cables that the lack of prosecution and Kaira's subsequent promotion into a top administrative role risk damaging public confidence in the national justice system.
