Update: A recent fuel price increase of over 30 percent is compounding Malawi's economic struggles, according to an April 5 report by Nyasa Times. Citing data from the World Bank Malawi Economic Monitor, the publication notes that the average cost of living for a single person has reached approximately $543 per month, far exceeding the average after-tax salary of $253. The fuel hike has raised transport fares and significantly increased production costs for the agricultural sector and small enterprises. Authorities have attributed the fuel adjustments to global oil supply disruptions and ongoing domestic foreign exchange shortages.

Economic scholar Dr. Ben Dzolowere described the fuel increment as unrealistic, warning that the policy risks worsening food insecurity and poverty across the country, according to Nyasa Times. Dzolowere urged the government to implement targeted social protection measures, including transport subsidies and direct cash transfers, to assist vulnerable households.
