The Family Banja (The Family)
A family is the basic unit of society. To understand our society, we must look at the different types of families in Malawi and how they are structured.
Types and Composition of Families There are several types of families.
Nuclear Family: This consists of a father, a mother, and their children.
Extended Family: This includes the nuclear family plus other relatives like grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Single-parent Family: This is headed by one parent, either a mother or a father, living with their children.
Child-headed Family: This occurs when the parents have passed away, and an older sibling takes on the responsibility of caring for the younger children.
Factors Influencing Family Size The composition of a family directly affects its size. Culture plays a massive role in this. In many traditional cultures, there is a strong preference for having children of a specific sex, usually boys. If a couple only has girls, they might continue having more children in the hope of eventually getting a boy. This cultural practice significantly increases the total family size.
Changes in the Nature of the Family Over time, the nature of the family has changed completely. In the past, families were very large because people needed more hands for farming. Today, economic pressures, modern education, and moving to towns have caused many people to prefer smaller families. Gender roles have also changed. Traditionally, specific responsibilities were strictly divided between men and women. Women were expected to stay home and raise children, while men went out to work. Today, these roles are shared more equally, and both men and women contribute to earning an income and managing the household.
Advantages and Disadvantages A large family has advantages, such as providing a large workforce for the family farm and offering a wide support network. However, a large family requires more food, money, and living space. A small family is easier to feed, clothe, and educate, but it might lack the wide support system found in a large extended family.
