Lesson 1: Emotional Intelligence and Self-Regulation Phunziro 1: Nzeru Zamaganizidwe ndi Kudziletsa
Duration: 35 minutes
Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognise, understand and manage our own emotions and to read and respond wisely to the emotions of other people. At Form 3, learners are becoming young adults, preparing for MSCE examinations, family responsibilities and future work. Strong emotional intelligence helps them make sound decisions, resist harmful peer pressure and build healthy relationships in the home, the school and the community.
The Four Pillars of Emotional Intelligence
Psychologists describe emotional intelligence through four main pillars. The first is self-awareness, which means noticing what we are feeling and why. The second is self-regulation, which means managing those feelings so they do not control our behaviour. The third is social awareness, which includes empathy, the ability to sense what others are feeling. The fourth is relationship management, which is the skill of communicating, cooperating and resolving conflict with others. A Form 3 learner who masters these pillars is better prepared for boarding school life, examinations and later civic engagement.
Common Emotions and Their Triggers
Emotions such as joy, anger, fear, sadness, guilt, jealousy and pride are part of being human. Triggers include academic pressure before MSCE, family disagreements, loss of a loved one, bullying at school and disappointment in friendships. Cultural factors in Malawi also shape how emotions are expressed. In many communities, boys are discouraged from crying while girls may be told to stay silent when angry. These norms can make it harder for young people to name what they feel and seek support when they need it.
Self-Regulation Techniques
Self-regulation is the skill of pausing between a feeling and an action. Learners can practise deep breathing, counting to ten, journaling, prayer, or walking away from a tense situation before responding. Another technique is cognitive reframing, which means replacing a harmful thought such as "I will fail my MSCE" with a balanced one like "I have weaknesses to work on and time to prepare". Regular exercise, adequate sleep and avoiding substances such as alcohol, chamba and khat also strengthen self-regulation because they protect the brain's decision-making centres.
Empathy and Respectful Communication
Empathy means seeing a situation through another person's eyes. It does not mean agreeing with everyone, but taking their feelings seriously. Respectful communication uses "I" statements, for example "I feel hurt when my work is mocked", rather than blame statements such as "You always mock me". These skills reduce conflict at home, in classrooms and in future workplaces. Empathy also supports inclusion of learners with disabilities, orphans and those from minority language groups.
Emotional Intelligence and Socio-Economic Life
Employers, teachers and community leaders increasingly value emotional intelligence as much as academic grades. A young Malawian with strong emotional skills is more likely to keep a job, run a small business responsibly and contribute to peaceful co-existence in the community. Emotional intelligence is therefore not a soft or optional skill; it is a structural factor that shapes personal and national development.
