The trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ stand at the very centre of the Christian faith. For MSCE candidates it is essential to understand not only the sequence of events but also their theological meaning. Luke 22:47 to 23:56 gives the clearest narrative of what happened from the arrest in Gethsemane to the burial in the tomb, and the other Gospels add important details.
The Arrest and the Jewish Trials
After the Last Supper Jesus went to the Mount of Olives to pray. Luke 22:39-46 describes his anguish as he asked the Father to remove the cup of suffering, yet submitted saying, 'Not my will, but yours be done.' Judas Iscariot led an armed crowd from the chief priests and arrested him with a kiss (Luke 22:47-53). Jesus was first taken to the house of the high priest Caiaphas, where Peter denied him three times (Luke 22:54-62). At daybreak the Sanhedrin assembled and asked him whether he was the Messiah, the Son of God. Jesus answered, 'You say that I am' (Luke 22:66-71). On this charge of blasphemy they condemned him to death.
The Roman Trials before Pilate and Herod
Because Judea was under Roman rule, the Jews had no authority to carry out the death penalty. They therefore took Jesus to Pontius Pilate and changed the charge from blasphemy to political treason, claiming he forbade payment of taxes to Caesar and called himself a king (Luke 23:1-5). Pilate found no guilt in him and, learning he was a Galilean, sent him to Herod Antipas. Herod mocked Jesus and returned him to Pilate (Luke 23:6-12). Pilate tried three times to release Jesus but yielded to the shouting crowd, released the rebel Barabbas and handed Jesus over to be crucified (Luke 23:13-25).
The Crucifixion
Jesus was led to Golgotha, 'the Place of the Skull', carrying his cross with the help of Simon of Cyrene. Crucifixion was the cruel Roman punishment reserved for slaves and rebels. Jesus was nailed to the cross between two criminals. From the cross he spoke words of forgiveness: 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing' (Luke 23:34). He promised paradise to the repentant thief (Luke 23:43) and finally committed his spirit to the Father (Luke 23:46). At his death the curtain of the Temple was torn in two, a sign that the way to God was now open to all.
Theological Meaning
The trial and crucifixion fulfilled the Old Testament Servant Songs of Isaiah 52:13 to 53:12, where the Suffering Servant bears the sins of many. Paul later taught that 'Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures' (1 Corinthians 15:3). The cross is therefore not a tragedy but the heart of God's plan of salvation — a sacrifice that reconciles humanity with God.
Application to Malawi Today
The trial of Jesus raises hard questions about justice. Pilate knew Jesus was innocent but gave in to political pressure — a warning for leaders and citizens in any society, including Malawi, where corruption and mob justice can condemn the innocent. Christians are called to defend truth even at personal cost.
