Lesson 1: The Study of History Phunziro 1: Kuphunzira za Mbiri Yakale (The Study of History)
Duration: 40 minutes
History is the record of past events. It is the study of how human societies lived, what they did, and how they changed over time.
Types of History
When we study the past, we group historical events into three main types. Political History focuses on leaders, governments, laws, and wars between countries. Economic History looks at how people made a living. It covers farming, trade, industries, and money. Social History examines the daily lives of ordinary people. It includes their culture, religion, clothing, and traditions.
Sources of History
To know what happened in the past, historians use different sources of information.
Oral Sources: This is history passed down by word of mouth through folktales, songs, and myths. It is useful for local traditions, but stories can be forgotten or changed over time.
Visual Sources: These include paintings, photographs, and films. They provide a direct look at the past, but they can sometimes be faked or show only one side of a story.
Archaeology: This is the scientific study of the past by digging up physical remains. Historians study fossils (preserved bones) and artefacts (objects made by humans, like tools). This is very accurate, but it takes a long time and requires expensive equipment.
Written Sources: These are records like diaries, letters, and government documents. They provide detailed facts, but they are only available for societies that knew how to read and write.
Reasons for Studying History
We study history to understand our personal and national identity. By learning about the past, we can understand the present and avoid repeating past mistakes. To make sense of history, we use a time chart. A time chart is a diagram that arranges historical events in the exact order they happened.
