Lesson 1: Life Planning and Goal-Setting Phunziro 1: Kukonzekera Moyo ndi Kukhazikitsa Zolinga

Life planning is the process of deciding, in advance, what kind of adult life you want to lead and how you intend to reach it. For Form 4 students, this is not a theoretical exercise. Within months of sitting the MSCE you will be faced with real choices about further study, employment, family formation and citizenship. A life plan turns those choices from accidents into decisions.
Why Life Planning Matters in Malawi
Malawi's economy is narrow, youth unemployment is high and most jobs are in the informal sector. Without a plan, many young people drift between casual work, early marriage and dependence on relatives. Vision 2063 — the national long-term development plan — calls on young people to become self-reliant, industrial and innovative. That national vision only becomes real if each citizen forms a personal vision that feeds into it.
Short, Medium and Long-Term Goals
A sound life plan separates goals by time horizon. Short-term goals cover the next twelve months: pass MSCE with specific grades, apply to a named college or TEVETA programme, save a small amount each month. Medium-term goals cover one to five years: complete a diploma or degree, serve an internship, build a CV, learn a second employable skill. Long-term goals cover five to twenty years: qualify in a profession, start a business, buy land, build a house, support parents and younger siblings. Each long-term goal should be traceable backward to the short-term actions that support it.
The SMART Framework
Goals that remain vague rarely materialise. The SMART framework — Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound — disciplines thinking. "I want to do well in life" is not a goal. "I will pass MSCE with at least six credits including Mathematics and English by November, then apply to Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources by January" is a goal. The second version names the subjects, the standard, the institution and the deadline.
Identifying Personal Resources and Constraints
Realistic planning begins with an honest audit. List your strengths (academic subjects, languages, practical skills, networks), your constraints (family income, health, location, caring responsibilities) and your opportunities (scholarships, community programmes, relatives who can host you near a college, church or NGO mentors). A plan that ignores constraints collapses; a plan that treats constraints as permanent excuses never starts.
Writing and Reviewing the Plan
Write the plan down. Share it with one trusted adult — a parent, teacher or pastor — who will ask hard questions. Review the plan at least every three months. When circumstances change — a failed subject, a new bursary, a family illness — adjust the plan rather than abandon it. A life plan is a living document, not a contract written in stone.

Kuzindikira Zamphamvu ndi Zolepheretsa
Kukonzekera kolondola kumayamba ndi kuyang'ana mwachilungamo. Lembani zamphamvu zanu (maphunziro, zilankhulo, maluso othandiza, anzanu), zolepheretsa zanu (ndalama za banja, thanzi, malo, udindo wosamalira ena) ndi mwayi wanu (mabasale, mapulogalamu a dera, achibale omwe angakulandireni pafupi ndi koleji, mipingo kapena ma NGO). Mapulani osaganizira zolepheretsa amagwa; mapulani amene amatenga zolepheretsa ngati zifukwa zokha sayambapo.
Kulemba ndi Kuwunikanso Mapulani
