Lesson 1: Self-Awareness: Understanding Yourself Phunziro 1: Kudzidziwa: Kudzimvetsa Wekha (Self-Awareness)
Duration: 30 minutes
Life Skills begins with the simple but powerful task of getting to know yourself. Self-awareness is the ability to recognise who you are as a person — your feelings, your strengths, your weaknesses, your values, your dreams, and the way other people see you. In Malawi and everywhere else, young people who know themselves clearly make better decisions, build stronger friendships, and avoid being easily pushed around by others. This first lesson introduces self-awareness and gives you practical ways to start understanding yourself.
What is Self-Awareness?
Self-awareness means knowing what is happening inside you and being honest about it. It has two parts. The first part is internal self-awareness — knowing your own feelings, reasons and reactions. For example, you may notice that you feel angry when a friend ignores you, or that you feel proud after helping a younger sibling with homework. The second part is external self-awareness — knowing how other people see you. A classmate may view you as hardworking and kind, while a teacher may see you as talkative in class. Both views give you useful information.
Describing Yourself
A good exercise is to describe yourself on paper. Write your full name, your village or township, the languages you speak (many Malawian learners speak Chichewa plus another language such as Tumbuka, Yao, Sena or Lomwe), your favourite subject, your hobbies, and three things that make you happy. Then list three things that frustrate you. This honest list is the first map of who you are.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Every student has strengths and weaknesses. Strengths are the things you do well — you may be good at singing, running, helping at home, solving mathematics problems, or making friends laugh. Weaknesses are areas that need growth — perhaps you get nervous in front of the class, lose your temper quickly, or struggle with English essays. Naming your weaknesses is not shameful; it is the first step towards improving them.
How Other People See You
Sometimes the way you see yourself is different from the way others see you. You may think you are shy, but your friends may say you are a good listener. You may think you are stubborn, but your parents may call it determined. Ask two trusted people — a friend, a parent, an aunt, an uncle, or a teacher — to describe you in three words. Compare their words with your own description. The gap between the two lists teaches you something important about yourself.
Animals and Characteristics
A fun traditional activity used in Malawian life skills classes is to compare yourself to an animal. If you chose a lion, you may be brave and like to lead. If you chose a tortoise, you may be patient and careful. If you chose a bee, you may be hardworking and social. The animal is not magic; it just helps you talk about your personality in a simple way.
Why Self-Awareness Matters
Self-aware learners set realistic goals, choose suitable friends, and handle emotions without hurting themselves or others. When you know your temper rises quickly, you can breathe and walk away instead of fighting. When you know you learn better in the morning, you plan difficult subjects early. Self-awareness is the foundation on which all other life skills — self-esteem, decision making, communication — are built.
